Anna Rose Beck

An Austin, Texas native, Anna Rose Beck carries the weightiness of her songwriting with a voice that has been described as "both bold and understated, moving and hypnotic, brimming with passion but never overpowering," inviting comparisons to Dar Williams and Natalie Merchant.  It's hard to believe that only a few years ago, Beck didn't sing or play guitar.  In fact, she first picked up the guitar one summer while in the course of completing an engineering degree at Duke and spent the subsequent school year juggling coursework and a newfound addiction to singing alone in her bedroom.  She began performing in North Carolina music venues shortly after graduating and soon garnered a reputation for her hushy middle-soprano intensity, finger-picked guitar lines, and evocative lyrics.  In 2011, Beck collaborated with Asheville-based producer Andrew Schatzberg to record and release her debut EP  The Weathermaker.  Two years later, Beck's songwriting, vocal talents, and business sense have matured.  She raised nearly $9,000 via a Kickstarter campaign to fund her sophomore album, My Glass House in Outerspace.  Recorded and produced once again by Schatzberg, the album includes 9 original songs with full-band arrangements and will be released in January of 2014.

The tunes of Durham writer Anna Rose Beck still seem in development. She is interested in weeping country and whispering folk, but to date, those compulsions pair strangely within her songs. But her voice is fully formed, with a reserved incandescence that would make numbers much less remarkable worth hearing. The clearest comparison might be Nick Drake, a singer who, like Beck, could express and arrest with unspeakably slight singing.

Humble Tripe

Humble Tripe is the musical project of Shawn Luby. A competitive classical guitar player in his youth, Luby  received  national  recognition  as  one  of  the  country's leading  string  players,  only  to  walk  away in pursuit of a career in clinical laboratory science. After an almost decade-long hiatus as a performer, by found his way back to music as a singer-songwriter with the formation of Humble Tripe, and the release of their 2010 debut album, Counting Stars. National tours followed, landing Humble Tripe on stage with the likes of Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), Ben Sollee, and Shovels and Rope.  In October 2013, HumbleTripe returned with a stunning sophomore album entitled simply, The Giving. Combining modern  Americana,  folk,  and  rock  with  the  delicacy  and movement  found in  their  classical roots, The Giving showcases a dramatic leap forward in the maturity and richness of Humble Tripe. "With this  album,  I  wanted  to  take  the  time  to  grow  the  songs,  to  create  a  depth  to  the  arrangements  that reflected  my  classical  upbringing  while  allowing  me  to  expand  myself  as  a  songwriter,  singer  and musician" says Luby.
The Giving features  many  of  the  same  players  as  Humble  Tripe's  debut,  including Melissa York(Amy Ray,  the Butchies, Team Dresch)  and  Berklee  school  of music  graduate, Stud Green. The release also marks the introduction of York as producer. The union of York's punk,
hip-hop aesthetic with Luby's classical spirit pushes the boundaries of folk-Americana resulting in a haunting landscape of beautiful swells, dramatic tension and space. With vocal performances simultaneously evoking that of Neil Young and Mazzy Star, Luby's latest  collection  reflects  a  journey  from  songwriter  to  symphony,  from  delicate  to  dynamic, resting on tender storytelling shoulders, all the while delivering a graceful offering: The Giving.
