The first event of our 25th anniversary year will be the Merge 25K—a 25 km (15.5 miles) road race on Saturday, March 22, 2014. We are excited to announce the first details of our slam-bang finish line festivities. The party will be held at Motorco Music Hall and feature performances from The Love Language & Vertical Scratchers!
Vertical Scratchers is John Schmersal (ex-Brainiac/Enon, live Caribou, and Crooks on Tape) and Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!/Anywhere). Their debut album Daughter of Everything will be released on February 25, 2014. Pitchfork reviewed “These Plains” writing, “a perfectly calibrated statement of purpose from the duo, a speedy, off-kilter slice of garage pop that warmly vibrates with tactile webs of guitars, snappy key changes, and harmonies, wrapped up in Schmersal’s charming falsetto.” Listen & share “These Plains” below!
The Love Language is the project of native North Carolina songwriter and frontman Stuart McLamb. The bands’ 2013 Ruby Red features what Pitchfork described as “music that is gorgeous and unashamedly fun.” Watch & share their space-themed video for “Calm Down” below.
The Merge 25K is the first point-to-point race of its kind, participants will convene at the starting line in Chapel Hill, NC, where Merge had its beginnings, and race to the finish in our current home of downtown Durham. Our hope is to generate significant donations for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and Habitat for Humanity of Durham and Orange County while marking the momentous occasion of 25 years of releasing great music from our home base in North Carolina.
The Merge 25K is presented in partnership with Bull City Running Co. We are also proud to have the support of the following sponsors: Motorco Music Hall, Counter Culture Coffee, MapMyRun, Classic Graphics, Independent Weekly and Newfangled.
