Pop Up Chorus!
Monday is the new Friday at Motorco! Come and Sing.
Do you like to sing? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to do it on a weekly basis? Do you like classic pop, indie rock from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s to the present? Now’s your chance to scratch that itch on a schedule that works for you!
PopUp Chorus, which invites people to show up and sing, regardless of ability, returns for a new, 12-week series beginning September 22 at Motorco. A no-pressure, exuberant chorus, whose motto is “no audition, no weekly commitment”, exploded in popularity and attendance, since it began in January 2014.
This very different community chorus films and records two songs each week. Facebook and Twitter accolades have been received from many of the artists whose songs PopUp Chorus has covered, including David Bowie, Zoe Deschanel, David Byrne from Talking Heads, Sylvan Esso, Blitzen Trapper, Duran Duran, They Might be Giants and Australian band, Jagwar Ma. So cool!
Local arts entrepreneur and owner of Community Chorus Project, Lauren Hodge, founded PopUp Chorus, along with middle school chorus teacher and conductor, Seamus Kenney.
Kenney and Hodge are bringing their brand of choral mayhem back to Motorco for a new fall series that will open with two songs for the chorus “Love Shack” by B-52’s and “Psychic City (Vodoo City) from Portland, OR indie band, Yacht. The goal is to make Monday the new Friday by giving people a chance to have fun, sing songs, drink a beer, create and experience community.
Some of the people who come each week have experience, but most are shower and car singers. PopUp Chorus welcomes everyone, and sets out to remind people that there are few things as joyful as singing together in a group, one of the earliest and most basic human activities!
Founders Hodge and Kenney say, “We never really know what is going to happen from week-to-week, how the songs will sound, or who will be there. It is an adventure into the musical unknown.”
Chorus member, Melvin Pena commented, ““It’s beautiful and transformative. I love the cross-section of humanity, all gathered together to drink, chat, hang out, and sing pop songs. It’s all done for the simple joy of doing it. For a couple of hours, learning a song and spending time together with friends, not-yet-friends, and complete strangers is the most important thing in the world”.
Songs from the last series ranged from M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” to Lost in the Trees’ “Daunting Friend,” from Guns ‘n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’Mine” to Outkast’s “Hey Ya.” Upcoming events for the fall 2014 series will include songs by Prince, The Pixies, The Smiths, Earth Wind and Fire, Nick Cave, Neil Young, The Bangles, Black Keys and Raleigh based band, Love Language.
Doors open at 6pm. Lyric sheets are handed out and singers begin to learn the songs at 6:30pm. The chorus rehearses until both songs are ready to be performed, filmed and recorded, usually around 9pm.
Seamus Kenney says, “We have been proving since we began in January that Pop Up Chorus is the best damn thing do on a Monday night and is a great way to blow off steam”.
Join the chorus, and be the chorus. Come out and sing!
