Jonny Corndawg is a country singer, not a singer-songwriter. Born in Montana, raised in rural Virginia, Corndawg has been touring on his motorcycle since he dropped out of school in 2001. He's played shows in every U.S. state, Canada and eleven European countries, Australia, Argentina and India. But you won't find him on CMT. His music is more in the vein of that obscure '70s gay country that housewives would discover on a Bear Family reissue in twenty years. In addition to pursuing the lost art of the Real Deal, Corndawg is an airbrushing, leather-working, marathon-running, truck-driving American. Born and Bred.
It all started in 2010 as a good idea on a barstool fueled by whiskey and a love of American music. Daniel (the singer-songwriter with a penchant for classic country) and Zach (the guitar-banjo songwriter with bluegrass, mountain-stomp blood) decided to put together a new band to play a monthly residency at Carrboro, NC's local music staple, The Station at Southern Rail. They cherry-picked their favorite guitarists (Rich and Jason) and rhythm section (Jonathan and Mimi) to rock up their post-country, and added Andrew on mandolin and rhythm. Together, they wrote some songs, put together a set list and Magnolia Collective began.
After turning the monthly series into a highly attended success, playing once a month just wasn't enough for the band. With three prolific songwriters in the group, they soon had a plethora of songs and the crowds wanted recordings. So "Ghost Stories," MagCo's debut EP, was created during the swampy North Carolina summer of 2011. These songs were recorded with love, sweat and tears in Daniel's un-air conditioned, hot-as-hell Carrboro bungalow, fondly known to the band as the Bim Street Fantasy Factory.
Mike Blair and The Stonewalls
The Stonewalls surround Mike Blair like the perfect fitting sports coat with tight, clean sound that showcases the talented musician’s uniquely soulful voice. The sound is powerful, surrounding the vocalist/guitarist, Mike Blair, with a richness that permeates the room. Blair approaches his songwriting with a vulnerability that translates on stage. The honesty and emotion in his performance captivates the crowd while the enthused folk vibes of the Stonewalls take the crowd to their feet. The six-piece ensemble includes two sets of siblings, Mike Blair (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Sarah Blair (vocals) and David Graham (bass, vocals) and Michael Graham (electric guitar, vocals) and close friends Nathan Purifoy (keys) and Keith Butler Jr. (drums).
