Born in South Africa, raised in Germany, and migrating to Toronto to start his career, rapper and general pop chameleon WizTheMC brings together a wide array of styles and genres for a sound that’s bright and summery. He relied as much on catchy guitar lines and melodic vocals as rapped verses on releases like 2020’s Growing Teeth and the 2022 EP Where Silence Feels Good.
WizTheMC was born in Cape Town in 1999, and his family moved to Lüneburg, Germany when he was just two years old. In 2015, Wiz and some friends formed the musical collective NO HOMES, and their music caught on for a while before the young artists went their separate ways. In 2017, Wiz abruptly moved to Toronto to pursue a full-time solo music career, and he spent the next two years making connections and meeting like-minded musicians there. He released two EP-length projects in 2018, Blessings in Disguise and Backintoronto. WizTheMC’s first full-length mixtape, Growing Teeth, arrived in early 2020.
What About Now
That year, he signed on with TenThousand Projects, and the label helped get his music to new audiences. He issued another EP, What About Now, which included his breakthrough song “For a Minute.” The brief, feel-good track was streamed over ten million times and set the scene for several additional singles. His EP Where Silence Feels Good arrived in 2022.
